Omaha and Forgiveness

So, far there has been relatively little talk about the Christian response to the Omaha Mall murders.  But, as I said post-Virginia Tech, I believe it is important for Christians to respond in a way that stresses both the love of God, but also the justice of God.

Dangers at the Mall

Jamie and I are taking our children Christmas shopping tonight at a local mall.

After looking at the picture, and reading about, each of the Omaha victims in the newspaper today, it gives me pause.  Will we be in danger?  Should I allow our 13 year old to take one of her brothers to a different part of the mall to shop?  Or, should I require our family to stay in a pack the entire time?

Should I coach my children on how to take cover if a shooting begins?

But, then, I think the odds that anything like Virginia Tech/Columbine/Omaha will happen tonight are relatively rare.

I wonder if the bigger danger at the mall isn’t rampant materialism?  How does one take cover at the mall from that?

The Wittenberg door has linked to a CNN video about the investigation that GSOI (Great State of Iowa) Senator Grassley initiated.  According to the Senator, over $20,000 was spent on a commode.

Meanwhile, according to an AP article, only two of the ministries submitted records to the Senator’s office.

The worst words anyone will ever hear are, “Away from me, I never knew you.”  There are a group of people who think they are Christians, when in fact they are not (Matthew 7:23).  There is a kind of faith that is only dead faith (James 2:17).

Paul Washer gives a much needed warning about false assurance.

Sarah Edwards on Her Husband’s Death

Jonathan Edwards was North America’s greatest theologian.  He produced a vast body of theological and philosophical work, amid being a pastor and missionary.

Edwards died when he was only 54 years old.  His wife, Sarah Edwards, who was to die a few months later of dysentery and be buried with her husband wrote to her daughter Esther upon hearing of her husband’s death.“What shall I say? A holy and good God has covered us with a dark cloud. O that we may kiss the rod, and lay our hands on our mouths! The Lord has done it. He has made me adore his goodness, that we had him so long. But my God lives; and he has my heart. O what a legacy my husband and your father, has left us! We are all given to God; and there I am, and love to be.” Quoted in Murray, Jonathan Edwards: A New Biography, 446.

This is a very solid series of talks given by Darrin Patrick at Covenant Seminary in St. Louis.  There is much to learn here even beyond the immediate subject of the Emergent Church.

I didn’t know anything about Darrin Patrick prior to listening to these.  But, I was impressed.
